Dr. Robert Birnie, Principal,

Rob provides a full range of general dental services. His areas of special interest include prevention of dental diseases, which starts with the education of the patients as to the causes of dental decay and gum disease. Rob also provides orthodontic treatments including Invisalign. Invisalign treatment consists of a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that you change every two weeks for the next set of aligners. Each aligner is individually manufactured for your teeth and your teeth only. As you replace each aligner, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position.

Dr Birnie now also offers the new Wand painless injection system. Many patients have a fear of dental injections or suffer from needle phobia. The Wand is a computer-controlled dental device for giving local anaesthetic. The flow rate of the local anaesthetic is controlled by the computer, which ensures that it is slow and steady and not forceful and painful. It does not look like a syringe – in fact, it looks more like a pen – and so does not make people feel anxious at first sight.

Outside work, Rob is a keen tenpin bowler and has represented the Island and Scotland over the years at international competitions including the Commonwealth games. He also drills bowling balls for new bowlers and we joke that he drills teeth by day and bowling balls by night!

He is also a keen kart racer and loves nothing more than tinkering with engines at the weekend.
